The walls are 8″ thick reinforced concrete, with a ledge to accept the floor on the inside. The aluminum forms are light to put in place and create a fine, smooth wall surface. After the concrete set we removed the forms and applied rigid insulation to both the interior and exterior surfaces of the foundation wall. This extra amount of insulation pays off greatly in guarding against heat loss and helps keep the floors warm as well. To protect the insulation we cover it with a reinforced fiberglass material that is gray. Once the grade is brought up it looks great and keeps the insulation secure and tight.

Their basement has been wet almost all the time, in spite of having some draintile and a sump pump in a portion of the basement. The real problem seems to be with iron ochre. From what I know about iron ocher it is a very problematic material. I believe it is a bacteria that lives off of disolved iron in water. It is fierce about growing in areas, and it tends to clog up drainage ways. In this instance the previously installed draingage tile included a filter fabric on the outside of the tile. Iron orcher completely plugged the filter fabric and has been growing inside the drainage pipe on the corrugated walls of the tile. Hopefully our work will resolve the water issues.

The windows in this home are in good condition so we relocated one of them to create a corner window unit. I really like how corner windows function in a kitchen. They provide a great amount of light, have views in two directions, and provide a more consistent ‘flow’ for cabinetry. The electricians will have their work inspected later today which will allow us to insulate and begin drywall. As part of their work the electricians did a good job fishing new wiring around to feed the new recessed light fixtures in the ceiling.

The existing deck at this home was in poor condition so we are replacing it. Decks are subject to a lot of weather conditions which tends to promote decay. We constructed the new deck strucutre using pressure treated framing lumber. All the framing is being connected using the proper metal connector plates. We were able to use the existing concete deck footing supports which made the job a bit easier. Once the framing is completed we will finish the deck using Trex solid planking.

We did a lot of preliminary planning with the kitchen designer and owner to get details worked out. The first task is always demolition, which is well underway. The old cabinets were mainly constructed in place which makes them a bit more difficult to remove. We’ve covered and protected finished surfaces….once again using old political signs for the floors.

Marvin Windows sponsors such events from time to time in an effort to make contractors aware of new products, new installation details, and to see exactly how the windows and doors are manufactured. We left from the business airport in Minneapolis and flew to Warroad in on of Marvin’s business jets. While it is a mightly long automobile ride to Warroad, the jet, flying at an airspeed of 495 miles per hour, only took about 45 minutes to arrive.

Once we reached Warroad our first stop was at the museum and training center. This is a fabulous building, new since the last time I was in Warroad. Marvin Windows constructed the building for training and handling groups that tour the factory. There are six main training rooms. Each of the large rooms is complete with full video systems and is surrounded by a particular type of Marvin product. One room has all types of casement windows, another all types of double-hung windows, another all types of doors, etc. You can work with the products, operate all of them, and see features that make the Marvin Windows and Door lines unique. The facility is a great addition to Marvin’s corporate campus, providing areas for meetings, relaxing and learning.

After each training session we then went and toured that part of the factory that produces the product. No cameras are allowed in the manufacturing plant, but we were able to access all areas, visit with workers and learn a lot about the products. Marvin Windows and Doors uses a complex order processing method that impressed me. When a custom sized window frame is moving through the plant, when it gets to the sash department there the custom sash is waiting right on the line where it should be. And when the sash is finished and heads over for glazing, there is the custom glass ready and waiting. It really is remarkable.

After dinner the first evening we went to The Shed. This is a private automobile museum owned by a member of the Marvin family that features about 85 automobiles. The vehicles are mainly from the late 1950′s to the early 1070′s….the ‘muscle car era’. Each automobile has been restored to pristine condition. There were also some older originial vehicles that I really liked.

ABC typically hosts the event in a few regions of Minnesota. We attended the event held at Cabelas in Owatonna. The purpose of the event is for general contractors to meet subcontractos and material suppliers. Each of the participating general contractors has a table. About 8 vendors and subcontractors sit at the table and hear a brief presentation from the general contractor. Then the contractor gets to hear from the vendors and subcontractors about their products and capabilites. After approximately 15-20 minutes we pause and people switch tables. We had about 100 people in attendance at the event. It was a great time to meet some new vendors and catch up with old friends. I learned that some of our vendors are changing emphasis or direction in their companies. Cabelas meeting room was a good venue for the event.

As part of our work we reused the existing porch columns, adding interior reinforcement as required. That allowed us to install an electrical receptacle on the inside face of the porch column, creating a handy place to plug in a coffee or cider pot. We also trimmed the column tops to finish off the column….something that was not done on the original porch.

We used some nice fir flooring that the owners are thinking about putting a clear finish on instead of painting the boards. They may do the same clear finish on the beaded ceiling boards. The big bonus for the owners is the basement. The old porch was supported….weakly….on columns. We created a basement that has doorway into the existing basement. This new basement will provide and excellent dry storage area. Painting will have to wait until spring.

What a lovely city! It has a nice downtown are that is vibrant and full of shops, restaurants and all sorts of venues. There are many historic buildings in this city too. They vary from Italianette architecture to basic, solid 1920′s brick storefronts, to more contemporary buildings. I especially like the adaptive reuse of their downtown fire hall into a restaurant.

Rapid City is know as the ‘City of Presidents’ . This is because they have life sized bronze statues of each of our Presidents on downtown corners. It is fun to walk around and view this artwork. I’m shown here with Ronald Reagan. The statues were all created with private funds.

Of course, no trip to South Dakota is complete without a stop at Mount Rushmore. We had absolutely perfect weather to see this magnificant carving, as well as the Crazy Horse carving. Both of these boggle the mind as how to accomplish such enormous carving jobs. The interpretive centers at both locations are very good, giving a fine feeling for what a job it is to accomplish this work. The walk down the avenue of state flags leading to Mt. Rushmore is a beautiful walk. The Crazy Horse Memorial has the face completed and much of the extended arm, but many, many more tons of rock still need to be removed.

On the way home we stopped for a picnic lunch at a rest stop at Chamberlain where we crossed the Missouri River. This is a wide, powerful river. The rest stop had an interperative center that told stories of the Lewis and Clark expedition into this area. And of course, we had to stop at the corn palace in Mitchell to see the current version of the corn palace. It is really remarkable artwork to see the pictures that they make with varieties of corn.

Lots to see and do in South Dakota!

We had not done much ‘exploring’ in that state, mainly just passing through it on the way to somewher else. This time we wanted to visit and see parts of the state. Our first visit was to Pierre to see the state capitol. Having spend several years working in Minnesota’s capitol when I was a State Representative, I really like to visit capitols and see how they work in other states. South Dakota has a gorgeous 101 year old capitol building. It is constructed of several types of stone, including white marble, Indiana limestone and native granite material. The very large rotunda is 96′ high from the main floor. But what is truly amazing is the capitol grounds. The area surrounding the capitol building is lush and planted with trees, shrubs and flowers. Every tree has a nice permanent sign identifying the type of tree. Just to the east of the capitol building is a small man-made lake with park area around it. It is an idyllic setting and one all South Dakotans should be proud of. On the shore of the lake is a monument to the soldiers, sailors and airmen who have served in our military branches. The life size statues honor each branch of the military.

From Pierre we continued west on highway 14 through central South Dakota. Highway 14 is not a freeway road (I like to take ‘blue highways’ when we travel) but it, like every South Dakota road we traveled on, was in excellent condition. I’m not sure if the good roads is related to having less than a million people in the state, or is reflective of an adequate transportation budget, but South Dakota has to be commended for the quality of their roads. We arrived in Deadwood for the night. Deadwood is a town that almost became a ghost town in the 1970′s. It is off the highways and in the Black Hills, jammed in between hills as narrow as 300 yards in some places. Infrastructure and buildings were decaying and the town was dying. City leaders came up with a plan to ask the legislature to approve limited gambling, with a big share of the stake going to the city to rebuilt itself. The legislature approved that in 1989 and it paid off hugely. Millions and millions of dollars have been generated to fund all types of repairs. And the city is busy with tourism now, generating strong economic dollars. We checked into the historic Bullock Hotel right on main street and enjoyed our visit. Deadwood had several fires in the late 1800′s and as a result, all downtown buildings were required to be rebuilt of brick or stone. The town is filled with historical buildings. There is a 1930′s gas station that reflects the Art Deco style. It has been turned into a restaurant—Mustand Sally’s— with good food and atmosphere. This is the town where Wild Bill Hickok was gunned down in the #10 Saloon, marking a piece of Western history.

I’ll post more later.
