This home has exterior walls constructed using insulated concrete forms (ICF) by Reward. Reward includes fastening strips on each side of the form. On the exterior the siding is screwed to the fastening strips. It is a bit slower using screws to attach the siding and trims, but it holds the siding securely to the house wall. Siding is exposed to significant wind volumes and needs to be attached securely to stay in place.

Work also has been moving along on the interior of the home. The drywall was installed and is being finished. The living room and master bedroom on this home have a vaulted ceiling. The vault is a 4/12 pitch so it ends up being about 12′ high at the peak, creaing a light, airy feel to the home.

We had ServiceMaster at our East side Northfield new home project yesterday cleaning and polishing. They do a fine job making sure the home is in move in condition for the owners.

It really struck me how nice and light the home is. Even with cloudy skies and drizzle yesterday the house had a very warm feeling. Some areas, such as the staircase, are flooded with light creating an interplay of shadows and designs on the balusters. Other areas, such as the eating nook, create a real cozy feeling.

The kitchen incorporates honed black granite countertop work areas. Most of the granite countertops we install is polished. This honed surface doesn’t reflect light and creates a softer appearance. The honed dark granite creates a nice contrast with the lighter bamboo countertop used on the island.

The fireplace is a three-sided gas unit. It was not embellished with extra materials, just wrapped with oak to match the bookcases that surround the unit. Being able to view the fire from three sides is a nice feature.

The flooring is being installed by Bierman’s Flooring. This unit has nice laminate wood flooring in the kitchen and into the living room. This flooring goes well with the cherry cabinets. After the flooring work is completed we install wood baseboards at the perimeter.

The granite countertops were installed last week. An undermount stainless steel sink was incorporated into the granite countertops. Granite makes a wonderful countertop material. It tough, doesn’t scratch easily, and doesn’t absorb most liquids. I like the natural look of cut stone.

The owner selected cherry finished hardwood for the doors and trim in the condominiums. We installed a 15 light glass French door between the living room and the study. This allows light to pass through but keeps out sound when closed.

The bathroom in the unit incorporates a wall hung water closet. This is a very nice feature in that it makes cleaning the floor much easier. As in the other areas, the vanity is has a cherry finish.

Our East side new home is progressing nicely. Our carpenters have been busy with the stairway to the second floor. The stair is constructed of red oak as is all the trim in the home. The stairs has open railings with balusters and newel posts. This type of stairway is a challenge for carpenters because it uses what is called a reverse skirt board at the open areas. A reverse skirt has a mitered joint at each tread where the riser meets the skirt board. This requires the skirt board to be cut with all the miters, set in place, then each riser and tread fit. It takes some time but it makes a very pretty staircase.

We have set the custom bookcases in the hallway. The shelves in these bookcases are about 10” deep. Most of the shelves are adjustable to suit the size of books and art work to be displayed here. We also have the seats set in place in the eating nook at the kitchen. This is a really nice spot with east views of the backyard.

The music room is flanked by some smaller bookcases set on the floor, with oak columns extending up to the lowered ceiling. The ceiling in the music room has some oak trim on it as well. This creates a very nice setting for the piano.

All the cabinets are cherry, but each of the three units is slightly different. One of the units has plastic laminate countertops for the work areas in the kitchen and granite on the island. We set the laminate tops, cut in the sink and are ready for the plumbers to do their installations.

Today, with our massive white snowfall, I saw a gray fox marching along the riverbank….too quick for a photo however.

Each of the units is slightly different and will have different interior finishes. For this unit we are using cherry cabinets with framed panel doors. We are installing a good sized crown molding at the top of the cabinets. Cherry has a very warm feeling which works well with the views of the woods and river out the expansive windows in the unit.

We had our tile installers complete the floors in the bathrooms and laundry areas. The tile is a nice slate gray material in a 12”x 12” size. The vanities are the same cherry cabinetry as the kitchen.

With the primer and first finish coats of paint applied, we are starting interior trim work at our East side new home project. The trim in this home is red oak. In keeping with the Craftsman style of the home, we have tried to keep the trim simple. We are using flat casings around the windows and doors. The head casings are slightly thicker and wider than the side casings, allowing the side casing to butt into the head casing. Craftsman homes didn’t use many mitered corners. Trims were designed so that average craftsmen using standard tools could create pleasing designs. I think this is being accomplished well in this new home.

The interior doors in the home are solid three panel oak units. This style of door blends in well with the Craftsman style. Our base trim is also flat trim without any embellished routing or molding applied. The hardware in the house is oil rubbed bronze which has a dark patina.

The mechanical equipment has mostly been set in place and connected. We are now running the permanent heating system. To do this we first clean the house well and then cover all the duct openings with filter fabric. That keeps the duct systems clean.

Next week we will be working on wood floors and starting to set cabinets.

With the very cold weather it was tough to keep enough air and heat circulating in the home, but we managed to do it. We are not operating the permanent furnace so the air distribution is not great and create cold ‘pockets’ in some of the smaller rooms.

The main floor of this home has 9’ high ceilings so we use 54” drywall. That allows us to cover the wall surfaces with two sheets of drywall with a tapered seam in the middle of the wall. That seems to work very will and creates a nice, flat, smooth wall. The ceilings are finished with a very light texture which breaks up light refection. The drywall finishers do most of the high work from stilts. This allows them to get close to their work without having to climb up and down ladders….but it takes getting used to walking on tall stilts!

The first one is a floor tile product called SnapStone. The owner’s purchased the tile and grout and we installed it for them. The 12” square tiles have a plastic backing with tabs protruding on all edges. Tiles snap together leaving the correct joint width for grout. The product went in well and looks very nice.

The second product is IKEA kitchen cabinets. We have seen many catalogs of IKEA products but have not used them in the past. Again, the owner’s purchased the products directly and we installed them. The light maple cabinets took a fair amount of time to assemble, but once that was done the installation in the home has worked out well.

The owner of the home we are building in rural Northfield has done the stone work around the fireplace himself. He first set a number of stones that he collected from around the United States. He then infilled around the stones with cultured stones. It creates a very nice fireplace. For the mantle he used a section of oak log that was milled from the site where the home is located. The oak lined box above the mantle is for a television.
